Do you have to be quiet when on a plane?

Every flight I've ever taken people are always whispering

People are generally polite and don't yell if they don't need to.  At the same time, planes are very noisy so loud voices aren't heard as they would be elsewhere.

I can't imagine how anyone 'whispering' on a plane would be heard at all.

Having said that, on a plane you're in a small, very confined space, possibly for some hours, so simple common sense and civility suggest it's better if people keep their voices down and don't shout or shriek.

No, not really. People talk at full volume. I know I do. I mean how can you hear someone whispering over those engines?

I would say a plane is one of the places I certainly would appreciate passengers being quiet.

No you don't but it is just common decency not to start shouting etc. People respect others around them and not everyone wants to hear your conversation.
