There is a wonderful book by John Keay called "The Great Arc". It describes the original survey of India by the British, starting with a chain (literally links) of known length from a known position, and using theodolites and trigonometry to extend measurements from the south of India to the point where they could make a decent calculation of the height of Mt Everest from a distance of over 100 miles.
