It's from a middle eastern fairy tale 10001 and the rugs or carpet are more likely of turkish (Ottoman) in nature as that is what the turks were known for. 1924's live action Thief of Baghdad film depicted flying carpets in cinema for the 1st time and the movie is a masterpiece above all fantasy films. By the way Aladdin was Chinese originally. The Djinn or genie may have been jet black (like Mr. Popo) and bald originally.
