If I tell somebody to kill themselves, will I be charged with involuntary manslaughter?

People say Kill yourself all the time. How come it’s not illegal until somebody dies? Source: Michelle Carter

A lot of things are legal, that are not moral. If nothing in you is disturbed by this, you have some serious head problems.

You obviously don’t know what happened. It was a little more than someone saying “hey go kill yourself”.

A death threat has to be "credible" for it to be illegal.  Or in other words it is legal to joke about it but not if you actually mean it.

Yep, motive is a tricky thing to establish and that's why trials are needed and not just a look at the dictionary.
