The thing a person should pray to GOD is asking HIM for forgiving him of his short coming and all his sins , both big and small. Then a person could return to  GOD without sin.

You should pray for things that have at least an 80% chance of happening naturally so you won't be disappointed as often. An example is praying for rain. Rain will eventually fall - even in the dry deserts of the Middle East.

You can pray for anything you need. In the Bible, the book of Psalms says: “O Hearer of prayer, even to you people of all flesh will come.” (Psalm 65:2)  Yet you should consider some factors.

Jesus Christ revealed that not all prayers please God. Even in the ancient times the God told the Israelites: “Although you offer many prayers, I am not listening; your hands are filled with blood.” (Isaiah 1:15) Clearly, certain requirements must be met if prayers are to be heard. To be heard, we must pray only to the God of the Bible. Jesus taught his followers to pray to “our Father in the heavens.” (Matthew 6:9) He also said: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) So we should pray only to the God-Father (Jehovah) through Jesus.God also requires that we “ask according to his will”—for things he approves of. God assures us that if we pray in this way, “he hears us.” (1 John 5:14) So, for our prayers to be heard, we need to get to know the God of the Bible and learn what his will is.
