An 89 kg fisherman jumps from a dock

into a 140 kg rowboat at rest on the West side

of the dock.

If the velocity of the fisherman is 4.3 m/s

to the West as he leaves the dock, what is the

final velocity of the fisherman and the boat?

Answer in units of m/s.

Note: Take East as the positive direction.

    initial momentum = 89•4.3 kgm/s

    final momentum = (89+140)V

    set them equal

    (89+140)V = 89•4.3

    229V = 382.7

    V = 1.67 m/s

    same direction as fisherman, to the west.
