What's the best thing up-river or even down-river from where you are now?

I live at the edge of the Willamette River.  The best thing up-river is the Willamette  National Forest.  There are few people and little agriculture between me and the mountain snow melt where the river originates, so my tap water is excellent compared to most cities.

I am several hundred feet above the Pacific, can see it now. No river within 20 miles (the Santa Ana, the San Dieguito are rivers to north and south). There is the San Mateo Creek just a couple miles away.

So I guess the best thing is down river--the Pacific Ocean.
