If you're thinking of what I'm thinking of, they were used for room heating.  Still are, in some places.  Just found this, have look: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masonry_heater

What is a ceramic stove? If you light a fire inside it,  it sure isn't made of ceramic. Perhaps you mean a wood stove. They are made of metal, either cast iron or sheet metal, and the cast iron ones are sometimes coated with porcelain enamel on the sides. They are used to heat a house and/or to cook food. If you are using one only to heat a house, you light a fire in it. If you are using one to cook food, you put the food on top of the stove or inside the oven if there is one.

The inside of most fireplaces is lined with fire brick - a ceramic material.

they are used for cooking and you use then by putting a pot with food in it on the ceramic cooker top . You then turn it on to the heat level you require
