One month Boris rented

5 movies and 6 video games for a total of \$37.

The next month he rented

3 movies and 2 video games for a total of \$19.

5m + 6v = 37

3m + 2v = 19

m = 5.00, v = 2.00

The rental cost for each movie was \$5.00

and each video game was \$2.00

Seriously? Who rents movies anymore? Is this problem in a textbook written in the 90s?

OK- this is why you need algebra. You let a letter stand for movies and one for video games. The standard is to use x and y, but you can use m and v- it really doesn't make any difference. You know two things:

5m+6v equals 47

3m + 2v=19.

Solve one equation for m

5m=47 - 6v

m=47-6v

Now substitute that in the 2nd equation so you only have one variable, and solve for it.

Elementary eighth grade/high school algebra:

5m + 6g = \$47

3m + 2g = \$19

I'll let you do the rest.

PS:  This should be in the Education/Homework section.
