When they film a movie in a prison, how do they film it if all the inmates are there?

Occasionally, they use an abandoned prison but usually it's just a set - built especially for the movie.

Obviously they couldn't film a movie in a real, working prison!

A movie like "Escape From Alcatraz" was mostly filmed on location after it was no longer a prison. Of course they had to make repairs. Since the generator no longer worked, a cable from the mainland was brought over.

It's a set.  And now it's probably CGI to some degree.

I live in Illinois, and they have used abandoned prisons for movies in our state.

Theyre usually either sets or decomissioned wings/prisons. Filming in an active prison would be extremely problematic

They don't film in real active prisons.
