    95º and (3x + 55)º are supplementary;

    also, 85º and (2y - 5)º are supplementary

    So 95 + 3x + 55 = 180; solving, x = 10

    85 + 2y - 5 = 180; solving, y = 50

    Thus x + y = 60º

  • 3x + 55 = 85

    3x = 85 - 55

    3x = 30

    x = 10

    On the other hand,

    2y - 5 = 95

    2y = 95 + 5

    2y = 100

    y = 50

    So,

    x + y = 10 + 50 = 60

    85 + (2y - 5) = 180º

    95 + (3x + 55) = 180º

    85 + (2y - 5) = 180º

    2y = 100

    y = 50º

    95 + (3x + 55) = 180º

    3x = 30

    x = 10º

    y + x = 50 + 10 = 60º

    If y = 2 and y = 3 then x + y = 3 + 2 = 5.

      Ah, I answered this before realising there was a diagram to go with it.

    When two lines cross they form four angles. The angles opposite each other are called "vertical" angles and they have the same measure.

    From the top and bottom angles being congruent, we know:

    3x + 55 = 85

    Solve for x:

    3x = 30

    x = 30/3

    x = 10

    For the left and right angles being congruent, we know:

    2y - 5 = 95

    2y = 100

    y = 100/2

    y = 50

    I'll leave the last step to you. :)
