What does "Far Eastern " mean in this sentence ?

Relations with Japan most closely approximated the bureaucratic paradigm. Roosevelt was happy to leave the difficult and dangerous problems with Japan in the hands of the secretary of state and his Far Eastern experts.

    Far East = Empire of Japan 

    (and I thought bureaucratic paradigm would be the more difficult expression)

    "Far Eastern experts" = "experts on the Far East"

    Of course "the Far East" refers to Eastern Asia.

    The Far East is/was used to locate Japan, Indonesia, etc. Middle East was/is the Saudi Arabian countries. All from America's standpoint.
