What does "lonely" mean in this sentence ?

Roosevelt stayed aloof from the Chinese too, but for different reasons. He gave them every encouragement in their lonely war with the Japanese but very little material aid.

    In this sentence, lonely means they were alone in combat (or the only ones fighting) against Japan.

    As with every other word that you've been asking about recently, it means exactly what it always means. There is no special meaning in this sentence.

    Please please just get yourself a dictionary. None of the words you've mentioned so far is technical or confusing.

    It is always a good ide to have a dictionary by you when reading.  

    Lonely in this case means unaided.
