EVERYTHING, both the good and the bad, are gifts from God.  You can make your life beautiful (no matter how many bad things happen) or sad (no matter how much good things happen) depending on how you use these gifts.  If you focus your life on the 4 traps of seeking power, fame, monetary gain or pleasure you enter a bottomless pit because there is always more and more of them to obtain.  But when you use your gifts, both the good and bad, as a means of reaching out and helping others then no matter how poor you are you still will be wealthy.

I look back at the "Why me?" times of my life and I can now see the periods of my greatest growth both spiritually and as a man.

    Read Job.

Perhaps you could focus on figuring out why a loving god would allow that to happen?
