is it a common thing for one's health problem to make them extremely depressed/unhappy?

    Of course. Health problems impose limitations on a person. People don't like limitations.

    Yes. 

    Only really ignorant American mainstream doctors and psychiatrists (of which there are way too many) subscribe to the ancient Descartes-ian ‘mind-body split’ theory anymore. 

    Enlightened individuals and legitimate healers realize the brain and body are part of the same organism and affect one another.

    It certainly can be depressing to be unwell. It depends on how severely they're affected, in what ways they're affected, what kind of financial and emotional support they have, etc.
