What do privately owners of aircraft have to do to get permission to land at an International Airport?

Not that I'll ever have such deep pockets, I'm just curious.

Say that we are talking about a retired NFL Quarterback, or the Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the world, and they have about a 250 Million dollar net worth.

They love to travel, but flying is a hassle, and they decide they don't want to go through it like the ordinary traveler.

So they buy their own private plane.

And let's say that the plane is located in Los Angelas, and the rich guy wants to go to New York City in his private plane and land at JFK or LaGuardia.

What would he, or his pilot have to do to make this legal and get cleared for landing, at a specific time frame, on a specific runway?

Is it a matter of making a phone call to the destination airport ahead of time?

And where does the private plane stay during the trip, is there just a fee they pay at the airport to keep it there in the meantime?

    Most airports are public. Anyone can file an IFR flight plan or a VFR if they would like. As long as they pay the landing fee they can land there. Basically it's the same as any commercial flight. The only difference is that private planes won't park at a gate but instead over on the General aviation ramp.

    You didn't need to waste 3/4 of your post explaining to us how a person might happen to be rich, and how such a person might not like commercial flights and how such a person would therefore buy a private plane.

    This scenario is VERY COMMON these days, and all you needed to ask was "What are the rules for a private plane to land at an international airport?"

    If I was famous, I would probably want to avoid the busy commercial airports because everyone would want my autograph.  Therefore some of these people end up going through a smaller airport.  So instead of LaGuardia, they may go White Plains or Teterboro.  Even LAX has hidden entrances where the rich and famous enter so they don't get bombarded with fans seeking selfies and autographs.

    Well in your scenario, they would never fly into JFK or LaGuardia. They'd fly into one of the Executive Airports like Teterboro.

    And yes they would file a flight plan and obviously contact the airport so they are aware of the incoming flight and one of the fbo's to arrange refueling and other aviation services.

    Most owners do not store their aircraft in a hangar as that is an additional cost per day. Most park their aircraft outside in the designated area typically managed by the fbo.

    A more interesting question would have been if the aircraft were to have departed from say Vancouver, BC, Canada making it an international flight.

      Not much extra for this. The plane does need to land at a place with Customs/Immigration service. It can get complicated if the local office is closed. THEY WAIT or pay overtime fees until they are cleared. Thousands of cross border flights by private Pilots.

    They can land at those airports, but it's usually so much hassle to do so that they don't.  Most all major cities have smaller airports in or near them that handle private aircraft.  

    But if you choose to land at a major airport, you have to file your flight plan, communicate with the tower like anyone else, and land when and where they tell you.  The plane can be stored in a hangar or outside for a fee.  There is also going to be a landing fee, which tends to be pretty pricey at the major airports.

    Yes- they still have to make arrangements to take off, fly anywhere, and land.

    The pilot would generally make these arrangements.

    They file a flight plan like every aircraft has to. Also they pay a landing and take off fee just like every other aircraft and most probably the aircraft would be kept in a hanger and again for a fee
