Greet people, when you see them, be the icebreaker, and take initiative when you can. These skills will help, but sometimes being socially awkward is needed, for others to take initiative, and ice break. Listen, before you can be heard.

Read "Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior" by Judith Martin.

No, it's not some stuffy book of rules for which fork to use, for who to introduce to whom. It's a hilarious soap opera about two families, the Perfects and the Awfuls, and their very different approaches to life's awkward moments. It even has funny pictures.

Read the book over and over until you feel that "What would Miss Manners do?" is something you can use to help you deal with social situations. This will give you a lot more poise and confidence.

Of course ones own Perfect behavior is no guarantee that the Awfuls of the world are going to be kind or gracious toward one. But one can take great comfort in knowing that at least ones own behavior is kind, gracious, and mannerly.
