Meanwhile in the US the income threshold for sponsoring a foreign relative is barely above the poverty line, i.e. not nearly enough to actually support that person (especially considering that we pay for medical coverage here). Perhaps the sweet spot lies somewhere in between. But given the wealth disparities between certain nations it probably makes sense to try to limit the amount of poverty any one country has to absorb.

It's trying to help in solving a problem which has grown over many years into a major ongoing problem. Reducing incoming additions is nowhere near enough to eliminate the problems which accumulated over several decades.

Salary commensurate with highly educated, highly skilled positions helps limit employers trying to import cheap foreign labor, maintain salaries for citizens. A 30k salary is not all that much anyway, given the high costs of living & high taxes. Better to set a minimum of 50k to ensure only very highly educated, trained, experienced people are brought in to fill shortage occupations, and encourage more native-born citizens to qualify in these fields.

And salary is not the only requirement.

If UK was smarter, its politicians more proactive, they'd require minimum of master's or professional degree, minimum 3-5 yrs experience, minimum 50k salary, maximum 3 years on an employment visa, without any eligibility for change in status (e.g. marriage, etc.), and with minimum 3-year restriction on any return to UK. And cap the number of visas - not just the numbers issued per year, but total numbers still in effect, and only issue new visas as existing visas expire or terminate.

BTW, same goes for US, Canada, Australia, & other countries. Toughen up requirements, monitor more stringently.

Of course anyone earning more than £30k in a poor country, would be worth £60K in UK, so professions would be threatened and will block.

Salary is not the ony thing they need, that job earning minimum of that amount also means that employer is registered to sponsor the degree holding /work skilled non national for the TEMPORARY work visa...then once their work contract is finished they go home...so it is experience for them, ensuring they do not claim or become reliant on UK resources and the UK gets their skills/education for a short time

      - all you have done is qualify my question, rather than answering it - but I suppose it helps.
