Why do people say to "pipe up", when it comes to silence?

    It's what your mom says when she's feeling frisky.

    Yes, "pipe up" means to speak, ie:  "Don't be bashful, pipe up".

    And "pipe down" means to be silent, ie:  "Take it easy kids pipe down".

    I understand that the terms have a nautical history relating to when persons were piped on and off a ship.
