Buy 1 or 2 cookbooks in a cuisine you love, then commit to working through them. Each recipe will teach you a little more about your chosen foods and ingredients, even if it is just a novel way to eat them.

Lean the basic cooking techniques pan frying, sauteing, deep frying, stir frying, baking, broiling, boiling, and steaming. Learn how to make stocks and sauces, marinades. The easiest thing to start with is a soup for which you need a stock such as beef stock, chicken stock or fish stock. Learn how to thicken gravies and sauces and soups with flour or corn starch. Get a good cook book like The Joy of Cooking. Watch old reruns of cooking shows on Youtube such as Julia Child, The Frugal Gourmet, Yen can Cook. Learn ethnic cooking such as Italian, French, Greek, Chinese, Mexican, Cajun, Jewish, German, Southern, Creole, and any that you like eating. Don't ask for fast food recipes. Don't use ready made pasta sauces or Chinese sauces. Make everything yourself including salad dressings.
