Is Virginias plan to elect presidents a good idea?

They have a proposed bull that would require all electoral votes to go to the candidate that gets the most popular votes nationwide, good or bas idea?

If you're going to do that, why not just abolish the electoral college and have a national popular vote? It would do the same thing, so whoever proposed this is an idiot for not thinking of that.

In any case, to change the electoral process for the US president takes a constitutional Amendment, so a Bill can't do it.

Bad idea. It voids the purpose of the Electoral College.

This is an attempt to end run the Constitution and should be voted down. It would allow the biggest cities to dominate the election. Suppose a majority in Virginia voted for the Candidate F party but the Candidate S party's candidate got more votes across the whole country -- this bill would try to force the electors from Virginia to vote in the Electoral college for candidate S, in defiance of their own state's voters.

Can you imagine the riots this might cause in Virginia? Especially if it made the difference in the election!

That's hardly a new idea, but I am in favor of it.

The problem is that the Electoral College and the way it operates are prescribed by the Constitution. To change that, we'd need to rewrite the relevant portion and get that rewrite approved by the states, and that involves a long and complicated process.  There is a movement for this, many people are in favor, but it would meet with a lot of opposition.

How is it that the Socialist Democrats don't object to the Electoral College when THEIR candidate wins the election? This is a very BAD idea! If electors are locked in to the national popular vote, they are giving the election to the largest population states and ignoring the votes of their own state's voters.

It is a bad idea partially because of one of the reasons the electoral college was created.

If a candidate were to win the election then go off the rails crazy with power before the electoral college votes then the problem can be fixed by the electoral college.

It was meant as a safe guard in case we accidentally elected a tyrant.

It sounds like a sneaky way of basically getting rid of the way general elections are to be decided according to the US Constitution. There is a process for amending the Constitution and this is not it!

The Interstate Compact Bill is being challenged in the Supreme Court. It is expected to be overturned as unconstitutional.

This bill is taking away the state voting results from the people.

Depends on whether you think the American people should be the one to elect a president or not.
