Is the second amendment overrated?

Gun people say it is what protects them from the government. Ok...but compared with other developed countries, so many more lives are lost each year in the US due to guns.

Given the significant loss of life from guns, is the second amendment really worth it?

What if we use the yard stick of number of deaths caused to justify the removal of goods or services from the choice of the general public would be a good test.

The medical industry causes ten times the number of deaths in the USA. It is so bad that it is listed as the number three cause of avoidable deaths by some agencies.

Using your criterion the logical conclusion would be to deny medical treatment to the public. That taking some one to a doctor should be grounds for criminal charges.

So I would say that the using of number of deaths caused is not a valid yard stick to determine if a good or service should be available. That just like the medical practice the benefits out weigh the losses.

  • Excellent point. A 45 would not protect anyone from our government.

    • Depends on who is hit with it

The vast majority of gun deaths are suicides - about 2/3.

Of the remaining 10,000 gun deaths per year, the majority are gang related shootings.

There isn't a single law that could be passed which would stop either of those two categories of gun deaths.

The idea that the purpose of the 2nd Amendment is to facilitate revolution against our govt. is the stupidest idea you ever heard.  The 2nd Amendment was put in place to allow states to keep their militias after we decided to go instead with a federal 'standing army'.  A militia is a TOOL OF THE STATE.  And anyway, are you going to go after the govt. with your hunting rifle?

The 2nd Amendment doesn't ban gun control!  I doesn't mean ANYONE can have as many guns as they want, of any kind, and carry them around.  The whole argument is kind of silly.

US has less gun deaths than most countries with gun bans, and less over all murders than most developed nations. We also didn't have to suffer from Socialist regimes like many developed European nations during the 1930's, and 40's.

Worse.  It's a lie.  Guns don't belong in the US list of human rights.
