How old do you have to be to gain legal ownership of a dog (if different in each state, how old in California)?

The age of majority. This is 18 in each state, except for Alabama and Nebraska where it would be 19.

You have to be 18 to have legal ownership of anything really.

However your state defines a legal adult which, in most states, is age 18.  In some states it is age 19. You can look up the law yourself for your state.  You must be a legal adult to enter into any contracts of any sort and to be responsible for bills.

    18. The age of responsibility, to enter into contracts, pay bills, be sued. Be sued in case the dog bites someone.
