What is manhattan New York like to visit? Fun? Overwhelming? Or awful?

It can be all three depending on the person and circumstances at the time.

We live 90 miles north and visit often - at least once a month. We drive down, unless the traffic and weather are predicted to be awful, and then we take the train, abd have also taken the bus - which is more convenient to our home, but is not as comfortable or reasonable in price as the train (Metro North being cheaper than Amtrak - which is a nicer train.) We go to museums, Broadway shows, classical concerts, libraries, for our music business and continued private study, and for the restaurants. There is an entire street, one block west of Times Square, that is ALL restaurants - decent food, good prices due to the competition, and a whole lot better than *street food*. We plan each trip - prepay parking reservations, decide on a reasonable short list of things to do - and then come hoe to our own bed. Obviously, if you are coming from a distance, you need to plan WELL in advance, and determine where you want to stay - and IF you can get reservations for a hotel - there are times when it is impossible and you must plan over a year ahead. we do not go Christmas time. since it is over-run with tourists, and New Years Eve is just a horror show. same thing with road races, runner, protest marches - we stay away. But that is because we are ABLE to avoid things on bad days. We also go to museums when the Stroller Pushers are not there - yeah, you really want to contemplate fine art with a screaming brat 5 feet from you . Bit city travel is NOT for everyone - this is not an amusement park, but a working city, and people cannot step over slow-walking gawkers! So plan VERY well ahead, make reservations and buy tickets for whatever you can - and pray there is not a snowstorm or man-made lunacy when you visit! This IS the Center of the Universe!

It’s fun, but could be overwhelming to people who are claustrophobic.

It's a great place to visit but I sure wouldn't want to live there.
