Making custard - Would vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract be best?
I have both and my recipe calls for 1/4 tsp of vanilla.

I would use vanilla extract because that is what your recipe calls for. You might get a different consistency if you use bean paste. Usually recipes should be followed exactly unless the recipe says you can substitute one thing for another.Source(s): Healthy cook

I'd use both. 1/4 tsp or more each. I love vanilla.

If you use the paste use half of what the recipe calls for. It might be easier to mix in the extract than 1/8 tsp of the paste.
