Sprinkle a large amount of baking soda on your carpet where it is the dirtiest, and a light amount everywhere else. Use a stiff bristle brush to work it into the carpet fibers and let it sit for at least an hour or two. Then use your vacuum cleaner to vacuum it all up. Go over it more than once in different directions. If the carpet is still really bad, you'll need to call a professional carpet cleaner, or rent a carpet cleaning machine at a store and do it yourself.

If cleaning it doesn't work, consider a very large area rug along with a good gripper pad so it doesn't scooch.

Shampoo and vacuum often as much as you can.

Call a carpet cleaning company.  Those guys can make dirty carpets presentable.

Can you afford to hire a carpet cleaner from the grocery store or dry cleaner?  It might not get the stains out but you'll feel better knowing that they're clean stains iyswim.  After that I second strategic throw rugs.

Get a throw carpet or carpet runners over top of it.  Bits and pieces from a carpet store.  At least the throw carpet is cleaner.
