When and how do males first learn that they are required to register for selective service?

    Regardless if you're notified or not. in the US, males 18 and older must register for selective service (the draft in case it was ever re-instated).

    In High School.  In some states when you get your drivers Lic. you are automatically registered.

    My dad was in the army for while and was Commander at the American Legion Post 5. When I turned 18 he had what I needed to fill out. However, do to my car accident and the head injury I suffered from that accident I was in when I was 16; I was sent a letter saying I have been relieved of any service duties.

    A letter will be sent around their 18th birthday telling them to register.
