AB's- what do you do on the bridge?

I've been to the extremes- One mate told me not to get off the mat behind wheel and not to say anything to her as I couldn't possibly have anything to say to her that would be of any interest.   Another taught me how to use radar, radio, take sun/moon/star sites, weather program,... then slept from 00-0330 every night.    Whats average?

Depends on type of boat or ship, who is running it.

My last trip on United Geo II, a 135 foot crew boat out of Panama and all over Caribbean had a US Navy Commander in Reserves as Captain, and he ran the crew quite strictly.  All the deckhands had specific tasks and the mates followed his instructions to the letter.
