If you get an oil filled heater, they have no exposed heating element and are a lot safer. Being oil filled, take longer to begin radiating heat but it's more uniform over long periods of time. Just be sure to keep your power cords short and check the plugs & sockets for any unusual heating. Voltage drop over extension cords can cause unwanted heating so if used, be sure to use a cord having a wire gauge designed for window air conditioners.

I keep a Big Buddy propane heater as a back up. I bought it at Cabela's.

Be aware that anything your burn will emit carbon monoxide. A propane or kerosene heater is best kept in drafty buildings with proper ventilation.

I OWN one with the brand name Lasko. I haven't actually opened the box.

The HVAC contractor was able to replace my 30 year old furnace 3 days after it died, and it was a warm weekend for winter.
