Why was the USSR more of a threat than Russia is now?

Because the USSR was run by an ideology, communism, which demanded that it be spread all over the world.  Russia is not, and has no conflict with the American people.

The USSR was officially atheist and persecuted all religious people including Christians. Putin's Russia is promoting the Orthodox church.

    This really isn't that hard.

It was a battle of a way of life. We won the cold war cause or way of life allowed for greater technology advances than USSR.  USSR went bankrupt trying to keep uo. Today though Russia just developed much 9 sub sonic misses and Us is trying to catch up

I don't think that it was.

I don't think there is very much difference between the USSR and a Putin-led Russia. They are both dictatorships pretending to be something else.

Putin is an ex KGB operative who has remained the leader of Russia for an extremely un-democratically long time.

Russia is now a dictatorship pretending (poorly) to be democratic, just as the USSR was a dictatorship pretending to be a communist state. Putin cannot lose an election, and his word is law.

In the 80s, there was a palpable fear that something might cause the Soviet Union or America to launch their nuclear missiles and devastate the world.

The possibility of that is no less real now, but perhaps we have become desensitized to it.

Because it was bigger and their "politicians" were crazier.

I don't believe that it was.  The USSR was on "bad" country to deal with.  Now it has broken up into about 9 bad countries that we have to deal with .. Russia and Ukraine are just 2 of them.  Now we worry about wars between all those and their local neighbors AND wars among those 9 governments and several of them have nukes where all nukes were controlled by the USSR before.  =====  Somebody --- Reagan or Bush decided the US should be "friends" with Ukraine, and now Trump wants to be fiends with Russia,, and they are enemies so the US must be enemies with  one of them.
