What Spanish speakers? I hope you know that there are Spanish speakers in  Spain as well as in South and Central America.

In any case, US Americans are just as entitled to call themselves Americans as any Venezuelans, Peruvians, Canadians or Mexicans. They just come from different part of 'America'.

You're just trying to stir up trouble.

Because americans are not only those who live in the USA, but all who live in the american continent.

I'm sure you already knew that.

Because in a lot of Spanish speaking countries North and South America is just called America so they like to to call themselves American and perceive it as Americans stealing the word.  In most other languages and virtually everywhere else in the world outside of Latin America, America is specifically the United States and the America’s is split into North America and South America and someone would be North American or South American. Some Spanish speakers call Americans “Estadounidense” essentially a United Stateser. This issue is mainly found in Spanish speaking countries that have a history of dictators and poverty and is mainly South Americans that have the issue.  It is very common of Mexicans and Central Americans to refer to the US as America and Americans unlike South Americans. The irony in it all is America comes from an Italian’s name and has nothing to even do with the America’s so it is an odd thing Latin Americans get upset about it in the first place.
