They started calling them Uber when the app started and became very popular. The reason Uber became popular was for basically 2 reasons. The first, being there was an app which made it much easier and often cheaper (not to mention that there was no financial transaction between you and the taxi driver) and secondly, people were able to hire rides in areas that might not have been well served by taxis. Smaller cities often have limited taxi service if any.

Taxis aren't ubers.  Taxi drivers are employees of a company which provides rides in company cars.  Uber drivers are independent contractors who use their own vehicles to provide rides while paying a fee to the company which organizes the service.

A taxi and an Uber are both hired rides. Taxi cabs are owned by a company which hires drivers.  You call the taxi company for a cab (or flag one down). You recognize it because the car is marked "Taxi" with the company name, and it has a meter that runs and determines your fare.  An Uber is a private driver using their own car who sub-contracts with Uber.

If you call an uber, there might not be one willing to take you from where you are to where you want to go.

If you call a taxi, it will take you where you want to go, as long as you pay the fare.

A taxi may be WAITING for customers, at say an airport or railway station. Ubers usually don't

Of course you could call a taxi and it might take them 45 minutes to arrive (one of the only times I have actually called a taxi)..with Uber/Lyft you know how long it will be until they arrive

Very similar in function, but quite different legally.  A taxi is a hired ride.  An Uber is a ride sharing service.  Similar to asking your friend to give you a lift and offering to pay for their gas.
