During. The food keeps them calm during the milking period.

Before, it relaxes them and the milking starts as they begin to eat. It takes hours before the entire herd is finished.

Either, both, or during. The farms I worked milked twice a day and the cows were pastured the rest of the time. Sometimes, hay was placed in front of them, which made them a little more eager to get in the stanchions and kept them calmer while being milked.

It is common in many dairies to provide animal feed supplements while they are being milked. This assures they get the necessary minerals and vitamins they need.

They have the food there the whole time.  And a place to poo behind.  Most cows live in a very confined place. They don't move at all.

Few farms confine cows. Many farms keep cows in barns, but they generally move freely about within the barn.
