What is a good way to get rid of roaches if they have been around for a year or more?

Get a spray or a specific multi-purpose spray. Multi-purpose sprays can kill them in seconds because they're so strong and irritate them.

There are roach poisons that if one eats it and they return to the nest and die the other roaches will eat them and die.   Also for a permanent solution, loosen up your baseboards.  Pour behind them dry boric acid and reattach the base boards.  Any roach crawling under the base board (and they will) will be killed by the boric acid.  It is a permanent solution for very little effort or expense.

Keep poison traps anywhere you think they are and travel such as under sinks.  Replace them every few months (look at the box).  It will be a slow process, but it will work.  Then keep changing the them long after you think they're all gone (because they're not yet).  You can find these are Lowes or Home Depot.

Clean your house upside down like your life depended on it.  Roaches hate clean houses.

If the nests are already around the houses, they roaches will still be in your house.
