Treed area sampling?

I'm trying to sample a treed area (an area that has trees in it), someone suggested using fixed 1m^2 quadrants but it's hard to sample the area where the trees are because you cant sample the whole tree. Is it practical to use this method? If not, what should I do to sample treed areas?

Start with a fixed rule to include any tree more than 50

% within the quadrat. The exact rule does not matter as long as you follow it in all the quadrats you sample in the same study.
