I was surprised to hear on _The Secret Life of Machines_ that the fax machine was invented before the telephone was.

    Come on.

The telephone is from the 1870s!

Was it Mr. Bell or Mr. Gray??

    The facsimile machine came later!

Well the FAX machine that we have and know today (2020) is not an early facsimile machine, which was from the 1840s, but it was something very different than what you assume.  There surely were no telephones or even electric wires in the 1840s.  Read about Mr. Bain's invention.

Sometime back in the 1700s, that.

If you define the telegraph machine as an elementary fax machine, then it predates the telephone.

The telephone.  You have to have a telephone before you can fax.

"regular people" didn't have telegraph sets and did NOT know Morse code.  (Morse wasn't secret, but not many people needed to know it)
