Various types of synthetic and natural glues are used and are usually patented - eg Tack-Tick Stronghold glue. They are very sticky and animals inadvertantly trapped can usually be released with vegetable oil. Some formulae include pheremones to attract mice.

Any vegetable oil will dissolve the adhesive.  It only makes sense that the solution is readily available in places that would use a mouse trap.
