I've always wondered what it was like when people first started naming things. I picture a caveman pointing at a rock and saying "ooga booga" then all the other cavemen in unison say "ooga booga" at the rock

Cavemen and very primitive people have lived ,and maybe still live, until recent times. The languages of people like in New Guinea are very complex.

There is good reason to believe that instead of descending from cavemen we have descended from highly intelligent and technologically advanced people.

There seems to be enough proof of that.

Trees are now called stones. Rocks are now called saplings.

Your question is actually an entire  subject of science called linguistics. There is no simple answer

Why is a tree called a tree?

    .

'Cos it'd be pretty stupid to call it Eric!

    .

    Same goes for rocks!
