How come teachers don't want students to yell? Are they worried the student will hurt their vocal cords from yelling?

No, it disrupts other students (especially ones with sensory difficulties). There's also no need to yell - whatever you can shout can be spoken, and you're more likely to be listened to when you aren't shouting
