My Dad neglected his elders horribly. Does this mean when he is old I do not need to take care of him until he is dying?

Once they were dying he was generous to them.

Sure - you can do that!

but then...who's going to look after you?

Nothing is stopping you from making that decision but it would be better for the sake of your own conscience to do all you can for him.  Why be like he was when you could set a good example by being all those things that he was NOT? Why let hate, idleness, and a non-caring attitude go forward into another generation. Nip it in the bud now.

Too many variables to consider in order to make that decision. Did he treat you good or bad growing up? Did his parents neglect him when he was growing up? Was there an underlying reason for him neglecting his elderly?

That's a matter for you, and your conscience, to resolve. Two wrongs don't make a right. Never have and never will.

No .. you owe it to yourself, your self-respect and your happiness with the quality of person that you wish to be .. to care for your father when he is old.

    No.  Honor your parents.

Elder neglect / abuse is illegal.  You can be arrested for that.
