does peeling bark off a tree hurt the tree?

in my yard we have these big pine trees that have pieces of bark peeling/falling off. i have dermatillomania and peeling the bark satisfies my urges without hurting myself, but i dont want to hurt the tree either!

Sort of like peeling a scab off your body before its healed completely.

The outer bark would be OK to pry off but when someone wants to kill a tree in the countryside just take the bark off all the way around the tree in a ring and that will do it . It is called ringing a tree or circling a tree .
