What might be wrong with my 2000 Chevy Impala with this problem?

It has a check engine light that remains on all the time and I need (especially in the morning) to turn it over twice to get it started but it holds.

Sometimes, a loose gas cap can be the culprit up to 40%. Make sure the gas cap it tightened. It may take a few turnovers for the light to go out (if the gas cap is the cause). If that doesn't work, you'll have to take the car to a garage.

If only there were some kind of device that would tell us what a 'check engine light' indicated...

    Oh well...

The "Check Engine Light" means all is well, nothing to see here, move along, just ignore it.

Right?  He probably hasn't even checked the engine yet...

With a 20 year old car, the list of what could be wrong with it would be far longer than YA's answer length list.

Get it to a garage, or better, scrap it.

You need to see a mechanic and get the CEL fixed before your car totally fails to start.

About a 100 different reasons for a check engine light. Take the car to an auto parts store (Autozone etc) they can read the code that make CEL illuminate and tell you what the likely problem is with you car.
