What’s your opinion on the “war against plastic”?

Now my town has just banned single use plastic bags, now we have to use paper bags!!! How long before they ban paper?

  • I don't know where you live but in Southern California.  There are almost no 'plastic' straws or styrofoam  (sp) take out containers in any restaurants and, heaven knows what else Gavin Newsome will want to be first in the country with banning something else.

Paper is a natural product from the earth.  There may come a day when politicians will have the authority to do whatever they choose.  But until then, we still have rights to live naturally.  Although, we are losing folks!!!

It's a great thing. The convenience and selfishness of plastic compared to the higher quality or paper, wood, metal... it's a no-brainer! I honestly can't think of a reasonable, logical, scientific, non-anthropocentric response that argues in favour of single-use plastics.

It's useless.  The only way to effect real change is through a global commitment, like the ban on CFC's (which worked).  As long as the world's #1 plastics polluter (China) does not buy in, nothing will change.  It's like the city of Berkley going to all renewable energy.  Nothing changes.

Why can't you bring your own bag with you?  It's not exactly rocket science to understand that if we continue to rip down trees to make once used paper bags, we'll eventually run out of trees.  Or that to constantly produce one use plastic, its going to end up in the sea.

Cloth bags are definitely the best. A good quality cloth bag is much better than a paper or plastic bag, and you can easily keep one in your bag at all times.

Liberals think the solution to the masses of plastic waste being put into the ocean in the 3rd world is ban plastic bags in the 1st world.  Once again they find a way to blame people in the 1st world for the behavior of those in the 3rd world.

Not a big deal. You seem to have a problem with using paper vs plastic, what is your problem with paper bags?

In case you are curious, paper bags will break down (biodegrade) quite readily whereas plastic bags can take a really long time. If you know of some reason that makes plastic bags far superior to paper than let us know.

And technically, there is no such thing as a "single use" plastic bag (or paper bag) as they can all be used for something else (like picking up after your dog)…so if the law states 'single use' then you should fight that

Plastic bags can't be recycled so they are switching to paper. Some towns near me charge you at the grocery store to use them to bag their items.

Try reusable cloth bags, they're really not that difficult to use.
