He was promoted by Colonel Tom Parker, who probably was in the US illegally. Elvis had a lot of stage presence, and enough of a work ethic to record over 2000 different tunes. He had an excellent voice and he actually had his moments as an actor. Elvis is for better or worse, a giant of post-war American culture-pop or otherwise.

My favourite Elvis film is Blue Hawaii. The notion that he somehow "stole" someone else's music is false. Songwriters like Little Richard, Jerry Leiber, Gordon Lightfoot, and Carl Perkins (or their estates) still get their royalties from Elvis covers of their intellectual property.

Elvis was a charming, charismatic entertainer who was unlike anyone else. Many say that he was far ahead of his time he was a major influence to the countless of artists that came after him.

He was one of the first major stars to play "black" music for white audiences - successfully.  His appeal transcended racial lines for the first time.  He was actually a pretty decent singer, and he also acted, further promoting his popularity.  He was certainly an effective showman, and popular amongst various sorts of people, from Gospel lovers, to Rock, and Roll.  Looks were far less important  then; even so, he was popular with the ladies.

He was the first rock star. You should unseat him. You must be more talented and prettier than he was eh.

He was a good-looking man and a good singer who chose excellent songs to sing. He rose to fame because he came along at just the right time, at the start of rock'n'roll.

Until 1953, white pop music was slow and boring. Then rock'n'roll, (copied from black musicians) started being heard. Elvis sang lively songs and moved about on stage in a provocative way so all the girls liked him and he became a huge hit.

He was promoted the right way by Colonel Parker who pushed him into fame.

Elvis was not like Justin Bieber because he came in at the start of a huge new music trend, but did not write his own songs. He and his manager picked the right songs to record.

It was a different cultural context.  If he was alive and performing today I bet he wouldn't get nearly as much attention.  He broke new ground at the time both musically and socially. Just the way he shook his hips was both very controversial and very appealing to a lot of people.  Today people wouldn't give it a second thought but it was a different time.

    P.S. - He wasn't a mediocre singer.
