What are the rules about stealing the ball in a basketball game?

Can you steal a ball when the opponent is loading up for a shot? Can you steal the ball when an opponent is dribbling? What are the rules about defending and stealing a ball?

You can steal the ball anytime you want as long as you do not make contact with the player who has the ball.

When you’re trying to do so just try to slap the ball or get your hand or finger tips on the ball. Just don’t slap them or hit them. If you swipe at the ball and hit the ball first then you make contact with them it would be okay as long as you touch the ball first.

You can steal the ball whenever  the ball is in play.

You can steal the ball when the ball is in play. The only time you can’t steal the ball is when the ball is out of bounds (including after a basket is made), tip-off or jump ball, and during a free throw.
