private property and free enterprise were the historical precursors to the freedoms we Americans enjoy. Thus, I'll go with capitalism. PS: America is a republic, not a democracy.Source(s): grampa

Both are equally important.

Capitalism. Ask anyone who works for a living. We al know when we elect someone we are picking the lessor of two evils and we also know that most elected officials are not looking out for us. What we really want are political clowns to keep our economy strong and keep us out of wars.

Of the 2 concepts, capitalism is the most important. All wealth, in every nation on this earth, came from buying and selling things. All jobs come from the profits of those sales. This is not a bad thing at all. Pure capitalist transactions benefit both the buyer and seller. It's only when governments institute coercion into capitalistic transactions, that problems occur.
What's important for both is limiting the size, power and scope of government. The first thing any corrupt capitalist does, is buy politicians. Government is the real culprit here. BTW: a pure democracy is an awful form of government. That's why America is a republic, and not a democracy.

Seems to me if you have Democracy you will have capitalism. Don't see how you can have capitalism under Communism or Socialism.

democracy........which allows capitalists to BUY politicians. ---which in turn allows them to exist and get richer.
But ya can't do that, without democracy.

Capitalists have bought enough politicians so that they are really in charge. Democracy comes in a distant second.

By America , do you mean Trump and his supporters , or the electorate at large ?

Capitalism is, in a way, a form of democracy. People vote every day with their wallets, and the winners are the ones who get the most votes (make the most money). Consumers vote for what they want on the market and what they don't. That's capitalism.
