Hire car companies?  You're not Canadian, you're British.  Nobody else talks like that.  Anyway...

No.  If you don't have a major credit card, you're not renting anything with wheels in the USA.  Not unless you can pull $30,000 cash out of your pocket and stack it on the counter as a deposit.

Goods suppliers NEVER get to determine whether a card is treated as a debit or credit card.

Only the card issuer decides that.

So no, debit cards are debit cards. Whether used at home or abroad.

Car rental companies worldwide generally only accept credit cards, and will charge a deposit to that card which gets refunded after the car is safely returned.

So if you’re a Canadian resident looking to rent Stateside you’re going to need a credit card with a sufficiently large available balance to pay both the deposit and the full rental charge.

Generally debit cards are not accepted. There is not enough to cover the value of the vehicle. Credit cards are used so the agents can put a hold on some of the available credit.

You are not renting a car without a major credit card.

    Doubtful.

Why not ask the issuing financial institution who of the "Canadian debit card" instead of a bunch of knuckleheads on Yahoo.  Ya know.

They can tell you for sure, we can only guess.

Either call your bank or the rental company. I think you’ll get a much better answer than asking on the internet

Probably not. In my quite vast experience of renting vehicles only CREDIT  cards can be used, not debit cards. Most also require a minimum age of 21. You should call a few rental companies and find out for sure.

Yes, the vast majority of Canadian banks and credit unions are partnered with US institutions.  Just look for the NYCE logo.
