If someone you know said hello, after you did first (only occasionally saying hi 1st) & conversed only after you tried to,do you still try?

To chat to them when you see them?

They rarely try to chat to you, but do to others, they’ll say hi though.

Though you have to say it first 60% time.

This is in a social situation when you see people, or with aquaintances or chatting at work.

How much should you try to chat to someone? Do not want to seem annoying!

Update:

They only occasionally say hi first I meant.

You have no obligation to continue engaging in conversation after the initial greeting.
