how much oil clearance in engine main bearing?
- Old Man DirtLv 71 month ago
It depends on how worn the "bearings" are.

The Chilton's manual for that engine will tell what the bearing clearance should be. You can measure it with "plastigauge". Go to the public library and look in the manual for your answer.

2 thousandths of an inch - .002" is a common spec for an average automobile engine.

There is no universal figure for that.
Engines differ in type and construction but also hugely differ in size. I own a tiny Cox glowplug engine which is much smaller than my thumb. I’ve also worked on gigantic marine diesel internal combustion engines which dwarf the house I live in. They don’t have even remotely the same main bearing clearances.
Unless you state the make and model of engine then you may as well have asked “How long is a piece of string?”
