Map of global weather stations from NOAA.  Does this look like you could get an "average" global temperature reading?

    Looks skewed.  It's like averaging the temperature in your house, but ignoring your bathroom and office.

    And Cowboy/Dirac--no, satellites do not fill in gaps.  Those are two different measures, each with pluses and minuses.  It's either equal throughout or it is not.

      Satellites fill in the gaps just fine so we have the entire earth covered....
